Virginia Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Funding ISIS with Cryptocurrency
Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a Virginia resident, has been sentenced to three decades in federal prison for financing ISIS operations through cryptocurrency transactions. The U.S. Department of Justice revealed he transferred over $185,000 in digital assets to female ISIS members in Syria, primarily to facilitate prison breaks.
Prosecutors detailed how Chhipa Leveraged social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps to solicit and launder funds. His December conviction included five felony counts, encompassing conspiracy and multiple attempts to provide material support to the designated terrorist organization.
